Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide the alcohol?

No. Due to Ontario liquor laws, we cannot sell or supply alcohol. You (or your event host) are responsible for sourcing and purchasing all beverages. We’re here to guide you through the process and serve it with style. If your event requires a Special Occasion Permit (SOP), we’ll help you navigate that too.

What areas do you serve?

We’re based in Oshawa, Ontario and travel up to 100 km at no additional charge. Beyond that, we charge $1/km. If your event is a bit farther out, we’re happy to quote and coordinate — just ask.

What’s included in your packages?

Every package includes:
– The Cabbage Moth mobile bar (Fern)
– Two Smart Serve-certified bartenders
– Cups, straws, cocktail napkins, garnishes, mixers, and bar tools
– All the ice you’ll need
– Setup, teardown, and full service

Packages available:
Half in the Bag: 3 hours of service
Gone with the Gin: Up to 8 hours of service

Add-ons and upgrades available upon request.

Can you serve draft beer or custom cocktails?

Yes. We have onboard draft taps and are happy to serve kegged beer, cider, or cocktails (just ensure they’re chilled in advance). We also work with you to create custom cocktail menus that reflect your event’s style and flavor — no templates, just tailored creations.

What happens if it rains?

We operate rain or shine. Fern is fully enclosed and equipped to handle wet weather, but in cases of extreme conditions (high winds, flooding, etc.), safety comes first. We’ll keep communication open and work with you to adjust the plan if needed.

How early do you arrive?

We arrive at least two hours before your event begins to ensure smooth setup. Breakdown takes approximately two hours post-event. If other vendors are involved, we’re happy to coordinate timing with them.

Can you operate a cash bar?

No. We do not hold a liquor licence, so we cannot sell alcohol directly. However, if your event has an SOP that permits sales (e.g. ticketing or donations), we can serve behind the bar while you manage the financial side. We’re happy to advise on how to set this up properly.

Is power required at my venue?

Power access is preferred but not essential. We’re equipped with a generator for events in remote locations or where power is unavailable. Let us know what’s on-site so we can prepare accordingly.

What if I’m expecting a large guest list?

Our standard packages include two bartenders. For events with more than 150 guests, we recommend a third bartender for optimal service speed. Additional bartenders can be added at a flat rate of $200.

How do I reserve my date?

Submit our booking inquiry form to get started. Once your date is confirmed, a 50% deposit secures your reservation. The remaining balance is due before your event. We accept e-transfer, credit card, or cash.

What kind of space does Fern require?

We require a flat, accessible space at least 20 feet long by 10 feet wide, with a minimum height clearance of 10 feet. Drive-up access is necessary — we cannot manually transport the trailer into position. If in doubt, send us photos and we’ll advise before your event.

What is a Special Occasion Permit (SOP)?

A Special Occasion Permit (SOP) from the AGCO allows you to serve or sell alcohol at a private or public event. It’s typically required if you’re selling drinks, your event is open to the public, or your venue doesn’t already have a liquor licence. You can apply at agco.ca. We’re happy to help you determine if your event needs one.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Cancel with more than 15 days’ notice and your deposit is fully refunded. Cancellations within 15 days forfeit the deposit to cover scheduling and preparation costs. We know life happens — we just ask for honesty and communication.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry full liquor liability and general event insurance. All bartenders are Smart Serve certified, and we take every precaution to ensure safe, professional service at every event.
